Four ways improv can help you succeed at work

Four ways improv can help you succeed at workFour ways improv can help you succeed at workAs improv comedians, the same philosophyandprinciples that work so well for us on stage also work very well when we apply them to our geschftliches miteinander. Here are four ways you canapply improv techniques to help you succeed at work.1. Become an active listenerEveryone thinks that to be an improviser that you have to be super quick. We hear that comment after every show You guys are so quick. We always smile and take the compliment, but its not really the truth. The truth is that we listen very well. And we dont just listen we actively listen.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreYou have to be present, you have to be in the moment, and you have to be non-judgmental. You just have to go with anidea. And the way you do that is to listen and then build on that thought. As business leaders and en trepreneurs, weve learned that being a better listener actually makes you a better communicator. Youve heard everyone out so youre able to make decisions without overlooking things. Youre not thinking of the thing you were going to say next youre paying attention to whats happeningnow. In the improv world, we dont know where were going we only know where weve been. So its paramount that we all retain that information because its influencing our decisions, much like in the business world.A lot of people pride themselves on multitasking. But basically all multitasking is is doing a lot of things in an average way. When people are actively listening, theyre retaining anywhere from 90 to 95% of the pertinent information. When theyre multitasking, they may be retaining 40%. If youre at work running around only retaining 40% of the information, youre doing yourself a disservice, and youre certainly doing everyone around you a disservice.2. Practice yes, and . . .The number one rule that we h ave is to strike the word no and replace it with the two magic words yes, and . . . Its a philosophy, not a statement. It means that youdont judge anidea. You agree with it by saying yes, and thenyou add your2 cents so that itbecomes a collective idea and both people have by in to its success.People are often no, but . . . Theres a lot of negativity. People will always find the problem or the reason for not doing something. But they arent mistakes in our worldthere are only disruptions from the routine. Improv forces you to solve scenarios on the fly. Were all about finding a work around and moving forward.Becoming a yes, and . . . person is like going to the gym. You have to practice iteveryday and reframe your brain to not go to no first. If it has to be a no, so be it, butmake it a considerate no.3. Embrace all ideasOne of the rules that we live by is that there are no wrong or bad ideas, and nobodys ideas are any better or worse than anyone elses. There are just high- and low-perc entage choices. The creativity comes when you can recognize that every idea has merit. What weve found is that sometimes those low-percentage choices end up being wonderfully creative ideas that we would have never come up with because we would have dismissed them early as wrong. These ideas get the ball rolling. When you do that within your business, you develop a culture where people realize theyre going to be heard andthat theyre not going to be judged or shot down.Imagine how creative you would be if whatever you brought to the table, your team would build upon. Theres no fear involved. The freedom to create is endless.4. Empower yourteamIf you practice these techniques, youre honoring and empowering those around you, and they in turn will honor and empower you.For instance, we noticed that a lot of people wereon their phones before and during ourshow. From our perspective as the performers on the stage, we thought it was rude. But then our technical director, who sits behind the au dience and runs the lights and sound, told us that he was seeing people give us five-star reviews and tweet about the show.He suggested that instead of being angry, we should incorporate phonesinto the show. Now, we have people upload funny photos on our Facebook page, and we improvise from the photos. As a happy accident to this, our social media numbers are through the roof. When people think about the corporate ladder, they think that the way to get aheadis to step on whomever you need to step on. But thats not how we advance. The way we ascend is by making each other look good. We pull each other up.David Wilk, Frank Ford, and David Ahearn are the co-founders of the improv groupFour Day Weekend and the co-authors of the upcoming book Happy Accidents How Yes, And Thinking Helps You Open Hearts, Change Minds, and Win Together in a No, But World. As told to Kirsten Salyer. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class i n the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from jngste im bunde Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Learn What Information is Included on a Pay Stub

Learn What Information is Included on a Pay StubLearn What Information is Included on a Pay StubA pay stub, also known as a paycheck stub or pay slip, is the document that itemizes how much employees are paid. You will receive a pay stub for each pay period. It shows your total earnings for the pay period, deductions from the total, and your net pay after deductions. Yournet pay, also referred to as take-home pay, is how much you have leftover after taxes and other items havebeen deducted from your pay. When employees are paid with a paper check, the pay stub will be attached to the paycheck. If employees are paid by direct deposit to their bank account, the pay slip should be available online to print, if a paper copy isnt provided by the employer. If you are provided with online paycheck stubs, your employer will advise you on how to login to view and print them. Its a good idea to get into the habit of reviewing your pay stub and keeping either a physical or a digital copy, in cas e you ever need to verify your pay or deductions. This is especially important when you start a new job, so you can confirm thatall thedeductions in your first paycheckare correct. When youre applying for a loan, renting an apartment, or buying a house, you may be asked to provide copies of your paystubs from a certain period of time. Reqesting recent and current paystubs is one waythatemployers verify employment. Its also a good idea to save copies of your pay stubs in case your employer gets something wrong, and you need to refer to the document while ironing things out with Human Resources. What Is Included on a Pay Stub? Pay stubs include the details of each pay periods wages including the following, depending on your personal circumstances Gross pay This is your pay before deductions for federal, state, and local taxes, as well as Medicare, Social Security, and any insurance or retirement contributions. Gross pay is what employers list when making a salary offer, e.g. $50,0 00 a year, divided by pay period.Federal taxes withheld Federal tax withholding will depend on yourtax bracket. U.S. personal income taxes operate on a graduated scale, starting at 10 percent and increasing to the top rate of 37 percent (as of 2018). How much you pay will depend on how much you earn. State taxes withheld States set their own personal income tax rates. Some have bracketed tax rates similar to the IRS, while others use a flat rate- and some states have no state income tax at all. State taxes can be complicated. For example, if you live in one state, but work in another, both states cant tax the same income- but that doesnt mean that non-residents are off the hook. Seethis piecefor more information on state taxes and how they might affect you.Local taxes withheld Some metro areas, like New York City, set their own local taxes, which pay for local government services. Benefit insurance deduction(s)Health, dental, vision, life, disability- you might wind up contributing to any or all of theseemployee benefits. If so, your share will likely be included on your pay stub.FICA You might have seen this on your pay stub, but didnot know what it meant. FICA stands for Federal Insurance Contributions Act. In short, its your contribution to Medicare and Social Security.Retirement or pension plan contribution If your employer offers a retirement plan (e.g., a 401k, 403b, or pension), your contributions will show up onyour pay stub. Wage garnishments Wage garnishment is when your employer withholds a certain amount of your paycheck to pay off your debt (for example, a tax bill or child support payments).Back pay If your employer owes you back pay- for example because of an adjustment to your employment (hourly to salaried, or vice versa)- you might see the payout listed on your stub.Net payThis is the amount you receive after deductions- your actual paycheck, so to speak. If youre evaluating a job offer or starting a new job, youcan calculate your net payto g et an estimate of how much youll earn. The pay stub may also include year-to-date totals of gross and net earnings and deductions. If you have questions about any of the items on your pay slip, check with your manager or companys Human Resources department for clarification. They can advise you on your current deductions and on how to make changes to what is withheld from your gross pay. How to Calculate Your Net Pay There are websites whichyou can use to calculate the deductions that will be withheld from your pay to estimate the amount of your paycheck Paycheck Calculators How to Change Your Withholding Tax When you start a new job or want to change the amount of tax that is withheld from your paycheck, you will need to fill out a W-4 Form.Heres how to complete the form. How to Get a Copy of Your Pay Stub Copies of pay slips are often required for credit applications or to otherwise verify employment. If you havent saved copies of your pay stubs, check to see if you c an view and print them from the employee section of your company website or from the payroll service site that your employer uses. If you cant locate copies, ask the Payroll or Human Resources department of your employer if they can provide you with copies of your pay slips or a login to access them online.

3 Unrealistic Career Goals that Stress You Out - The Muse

3 Unrealistic Career Goals that Stress You Out - The Muse3 Unrealistic Career Goals that Stress You OutSetting goals is par for the course when it comes to your career. Whether its for the near future like land a new job within three months or long-term, like become partner at the firm in 10 years, its natural to make plans. And deadlines can be a good thing. They help you gauge whether youre moving in the right direction and keep you motivated. But forcing yourself to stick to a schedule when it doesnt make sense can be ineffective, and even hold you back. Thats because piling on the pressure to reach milestones without considering fluid definitions of success is limiting. With this in mind, here are a few common career deadlines that dont actually exist, so you might as well cross them off your list and stop stressing about them. Fake Deadline 1 Get Promoted Every 2 YearsIt makes sense that someone who wants to grow in his role has his eye on a promotion. However, the schedule for advancement is often less clear. Sure, some companies have a timetable for these types of opportunities, but others may not have structured expectations for how employees move up. Plus, the role you think you want in two years might completely evolve (because of your changing goals or the companys) over time. So, instead of deciding that you want a promotion in a certain amount of time, observe the company culture, organizational structure, and ask some preliminary questions about growth within the company. People may see their roles shift at different stages based on a variety of factors and its more beneficial for you to know what these considerations are than to hit an arbitrary date. For example, if you work in an environment where a promotion only becomes available when a manager leaves, you may want to consider other alternatives for creating value in the role you have right now. This allows you to shift your focus from the amount of time youve put into a company to one in whi ch you can excel and bring increased value to your team- and thatll definitely lead to more exciting opportunities than hoping your boss dressing nicer than usual means shes interviewing other places.Fake Deadline 2 Make Over $100,000 in 5 YearsYes, salary is the foundation for the kind of lifestyle, experiences, and things you have, and a little (more) can go a long way. So, aiming high in this category and setting a career deadline to double your income (or get into a higher income bracket by a certain age) is common. And wanting to make more money can motivate you to do things like negotiate your salary. But setting a deadline to make a certain amount can lead to the false impression that more money will bring more happiness, and that once you hit that number all of your problems will go away. (Spoiler They wont.) So, before you sign on for a role youre not excited about just because its a pay boost, ask yourself what difference that extra income will make (compared to dreading wo rk each day). You may find that if you have enough to cover your bills and save, youd be happier passing up a less-inspiring role with longer hours- regardless of the bump- so you can nurture other parts of your life instead. Fake Deadline 3 Leave the Company in 3 YearsFor as much fear as there is surrounding job-hopping, a lot of people also set arbitrary deadlines so theyre not at a company for too long. After the excitement wears off at a new job, you think Ill stay at the firm for two years, get my CPA, and then go into corporate or Ill stay until I get enough experience and then Ill start my own freelancing business. While planning can build clarity on next steps and help you manage current expectations, it can also set a negative tone for the present moment. Maybe a job doesnt exactly line up with what you were hoping for or the advancement just isnt there. But keeping one eye on the door can distract you from the current opportunities you already have access to. So, look to a cquire more skills to become qualified for more opportunities- be they at this company or somewhere else. Itll help you build a more balanced mindset, now and in the future. Trust me When youve outgrown this position, youll know- and its OK if three years pass and youre leise happy to be there.Creating career deadlines is all about balance. Planning ahead is a solid way to visualize what you want to achieve, but it can lose value if you only see those deadlines in black and white. Often times, new opportunities and unique ideas come from the gray areas, and strict schedules dont always encourage that creativity. If you have a milestone you keep missing, remind yourself that it may not really exist and consider taking it off the list.
